Phra Mahesuan (พระมเหศวร)
Thai. Name of a Buddhist amulet that is part of the five Phra Yod Khunphon. It originates from Wat Phra Sri Rattanamahathat in Suphanburi, and dates back to the U-Thong Dynasty, i.e. the beginning of the Ayutthaya Period. It is cast in iron and depicts a Buddha image seated in the half lotus position on the naga, a position known as pahng nahg prok, while performing the maravijaya mudra, i.e. the pose in which the Buddha's right hand touches the earth (fig.). The outline of the amulet is rather hourglass-shaped (fig.)
There are
many types and molds of Phra Mahesuan that
have been found. Originally, there were only
a few molds that were popular. The popular
molds are the mold with lines on the wall
above the head of the Buddha, called
"Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major" mold. The
mold without lines is called "No-Bang mold".
There are both large-face molds (popular),
middle-face molds, and small-face molds. In
fact, the lines that appear represent the
meaning of Phra Sri Maha Bodhi. The lines
and marks are Bodhi leaves. Overall, it
means that the Buddha is sitting
cross-legged in the Mara-Vijaya posture
under the Bodhi throne. However, because
they are becoming rarer every day, nowadays
all molds are sought after, whether it is
Suan Dio, Suan Trong, single-face molds,
double-face molds. Sometimes, there is a
"special mold" that has Phra Mahesuan on the
front but the back is Phra Nak Prok or Phra
Sum Chik, which is quite difficult to find.
All of them are valuable. The shape of the
frames of all 4 types of Phra Mahesuan are
the same: they are rectangular, concave in
the middle on both sides, with the Buddha on
both sides, but sitting with their heads
facing opposite directions. The
characteristics and points of observation
are as follows:
- Buddha's characteristics: The Buddha sits
in the Mara-sadung posture in all 4 types,
situated on a two-tiered pillow base.
- The hair is round and smooth, on the top
of the head (in two notches), no hair grains
are visible, but the hairline is prominent.
- The face is serious, showing strong and
fearsome asceticism.
- The eyes are bulging on both sides (like
grasshopper eyes).
- The nose is high and prominent.
- The mouth is spread out and protruding.
- The shoulders on both sides are round, the
left side is sloping lower than the right
side of the Buddha.
- The arms (from the shoulder to the elbow)
and hands (from the elbow to the wrist) on
the left side of the Buddha are round, with
a clearly visible joint at the elbow.
- The left hand is quite large, shaped like
a crab muscle. (similar to the hand of Phra
Phong Suphan, no difference at all) and
curved inward
- The upper part and the sanghati are
straight and stiff round lines.
- There are 3 lines on the side of the head
and 2 lines on the left, which are the
characteristics of Phra Mahesuan, large face
type.
- The size of Phra Mahesuan, large face
type, is approximately 2 cm wide at the
widest point and 3.3/4 cm high.
Phra Mahesuan is the most outstanding
general of Suphan Buri Province, found only
at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat. It was
also created at the same time as the famous
Phra Phong Suphan. Therefore, its sacred
power is equally excellent, i.e., it is
excellent in terms of metta mahaniyom,
escaping danger, especially in terms of
invulnerability. Therefore, there is no
doubt about the fake or imitation. Those who
are interested must study the consideration
of genuine amulets in the beginning.
